John R Gilbert

At the moment I’m working in three distinct styles:  small detailed portraits of horror film icons,  large abstract spatter paintings and then a combination of the two.    These works all explore the darkness and the medium itself.  I allow myself to inform the paint and in turn the paint informs the painting.

Using large bottles of watered down paint, large putty knives, water and gravity can yield such depth.  Bold, dark surfaces splashed with bright color can evoke primal emotions.   It’s experimentation as much as it is art.

Culturally we have such deep affection for the most violent characters.   Exploring fear through my art allows us to connect with our darkest, truest selves.
